Features and Functionalities of Foxwell NT510 BMW Code Reader

Auto VIN check for BMW cars

The FOXWELL NT510 uses auto VIN to identify a BMW vehicle automatically. It pulls all the information you need, including the model and year of manufacture.

The only problem is that it takes fairly long to do so. You have to wait several minutes before getting that information. On the upside, once the scanner identifies the vehicle you can do an auto-scan.

Trouble Codes: BMW troubleshooting

When it comes to system diagnostics the FOXWELL NT510 supports all 10 OBD2 test modes. It also scans all the main OBD1 systems of a BMW car. That means you can read and clear codes in the ECU (engine), ABS, SRS, transmission, and SAS.

By doing so this scan tool allows you to reset malfunction lights such as the Check Engine Light and ABS, SRS and transmission warning lights. It offers code definitions and a troubleshooting option that may come in handy for a newbie.

Data Display: BMW Freeze Frame Data

Built with a 2.8-inch color TFT screen, the NT510 displays both live data and freeze frame data. You can record the data for later viewing and analysis.

Speaking of analysis, this scanner offers text and graphs to help you understand the data better. You can merge the graphs for easy comparison.

Advanced Diagnostics for BMW: ABS, DPF,  TCU, Oil service

Besides pulling and clearing DTCs, the FOXWELL NT510 also supports an array of advanced functions. It gives access to important services like DPF regeneration, reset of oil service light, EPB caliper diagnosis, new battery registration, ABS module activation, control service interval reset and brake deactivation.

All the listed functions work well, save for the new battery registration. It can only register a battery of the same type as the one that was there before. At times it fails to register the battery completely even if it’s of the same type.

Professional Functions

If you are a professional auto mechanic you will love to know that the FOXWELL NT510 allows throttle body adjustment, component actuation, coding of control modules and running of bi-directional system tests. You can deactivate or reactivate the brake control system and trigger windows, lights, brakes and caliper openings manually.

Although Foxwell claims that this scan tool can perform key programming, it really doesn’t. You can’t do any type of system programming with the FOXWELL NT510.

FOXWELL NT510 COMPATIBILITY

Vehicle Compatibility

The Foxwell NT510 covers OBD1 and OBD2 cars made from 1987 to date. By default, this version is for BMW diagnostics but it also comes with preinstalled software for Rolls Royce and Mini vehicles. That makes it primarily a BMW, Rolls Royce, and Miniscan tool.

Having said that, you can upgrade it to cover up to 5 different car brands. Your options include all the mainstream names like GM, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Jaguar/Land Rover, Volvo etc.

There’s a catch, however. First, it can’t support more than 5 brands of cars. Secondly, every additional brand attracts a 70-dollar payment.

NT510 is not only for most BMW, but also for Rolls Royce and others.

Computer Compatibility

You can connect the Foxwell NT510 with a computer via USB. That connection allows you to download diagnostic data on the computer for further analysis. Plus you can update the scanner using an internet-enabled computer.

That’s great and all, but you may also want to know that it’s not compatible with Mac systems. If you want to update your NT510 or download its data you will need to get a Windows PC.
